Detroit Lions fans may not be the happiest people in the world right now based on the positional value of their team's first two picks, but let's get past that for now.
Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell may not play the most valuable positions in the modern iteration of the NFL, but they do stand to play large roles on this Lions team in 2023 that should still aim to make a deep run in the playoffs.
Gibbs himself may be the biggest surprise of the draft so far, and while this may still rub some fans the wrong way, the reasoning from the coaching staff on the selection isn't bad either.
If the goal for this team is to take this offense from one of the five best to the best overall, the Lions are moving in the right direction. The biggest question remaining is if the 12th-overall pick is worth a move that small in the grand scheme of things, but that matters little now.
One way or another, the Lions offense is going to be better with Gibbs on the field. The star back out of Alabama is one of the best pass-catching RBs to come into the NFL in the modern era, and you best believe he will be used to make Jared Goff's life easier on a weekly basis.
If the staff really does see this much with Gibbs in space, it stands to reason that there will get plenty of designed looks in this offense meant to make big plays from high-percentage throws at a decent volume. Gibbs is absolutely that player to break those plays open, and the Lions staff did at least make the more important side of the ball better with their first pick.
