Detroit Lions should sign QB Blaine Gabbert to fill important roster hole
Who better than someone who has already done it at the highest level?
The Detroit Lions have done very well with the current free agent period with one glaring omission; quarterback.
While Jared Goff was one of the biggest surprise bright spots for the team last year and should absolutely remain the QB1 for the Lions in 2023, Goff has no business being the only quarterback on the roster.
The Lions have to add at least one body at the position to ensure safety, and that brings free agency back into focus for Brad Holmes.
Now, the conversation about a backup quarterback is never going to be glamorous. There is no part of the role that will ever speak to glory or excitement, so a signing like this is all about value and asking yourself exactly what they bring to the table.
For Detroit, it looks like the best intersection between value and talent is former Buccaneers backup quarterback and Super Bowl champion Blaine Gabbert.
Again, this one probably isn't going to excite anyone, but think about it for a minute.
While Gabbert still has a surprising bit of athleticism and zip on his throws for his age, there is no part of his signing that puts any pressure on Goff or the current depth chart.
Players like Teddy Bridgewater or a Baker Mayfield, while not nearly on the level that Goff was at last season, could still find support within the building if Goff puts together a bad stretch.
Gabbert is safe and easy; this is a cheap signing that is meant to only play if Jared Goff goes down (or if the team is resting its starters).
Speaking of playing, Gabbert's biggest strength actually goes beyond stepping on the field. Goff has certainly done plenty to earn respect from those within the league, but even he can stand to learn from a veteran that played in the same role with Tom Brady.
If Gabbert was good enough to be the GOAT's second set of eyes and sounding board for what went well and what didn't, then he is absolutely good enough to serve the same role for Jared Goff.
Price would be the one point to figure out, especially when seeing that the Lions have a few other areas to address and could potentially take a quarterback in one of the later rounds as a project piece, but Gabbert should be on the cheaper side as he gets up there in age (approx. $2 million).
Backup quarterback is a very underrated role in the modern NFL. It may not seem like a huge need right now, but the Lions will probably want to act on this sooner rather than later if they want their pick of who they will pair with the most important player on their team.
Blaine Gabbert makes a lot of sense if you look at the options left on the board.
