There you have it. The Lions will unveil the statue the day before their home opener against the Seahawks in Week 2. While it's a non-public affair, Lions fans should be able to see the statue the next day before the game.
This is a big deal for the Lions. As Woodyard notes, the Lions don't currently have any statues for their players. Barry Sanders will be the first player to get one.
Is there a player more deserving of this honor? No way. Sanders had an amazing career that saw him reach 10 Pro Bowl's, six All-Pro teams, the leagues NFL MVP award and the NFL Hallo of Fame. He did all of that with the Lions and continues to be a big part of the franchise today as an brand ambassador.
We can't wait to see what this statue looks like. We also can't wait to see if the Lions plan to add more statues around Ford Field like the Tigers have at Comerica. Buy the way, where is the Robocop statue?
