Well, the great offseason the Detroit Lions began with free agency has officially started to end with the beginning of the 2023 NFL Draft.
There is still time to salvage this class with some great picks in the middle rounds, but the first two picks inspire little confidence in the direction this front office chose to go during such an important draft.
A linebacker and running back in the first round goes against almost every basic principle in modern draft strategy. The Lions didn't care, and now they are getting the response they deserve.
At this point, it seems like the only people who like these picks are the homers. It is nice to see people can always stay positive through everything, but the Lions fans that are more realistic in their world view and the vast majority of the analyst community share a different opinion.
In fact, it has been hard to find any analyst that even likes what the Lions have done, even if Gibbs and Campbell are both good players. The value just isn't there.
This sums it up nicely. The Lions are absolutely "it" right now in regards to most of the NFL community talking about how obsolete this strategy has been.
Here are a few other takes from respected members of the scouting community/NFL media:
Good luck finding a lot of positive takes on this front. It is going to be hard after such a questionable night from a team that had been doing so well. Hopefully tomorrow goes better.
