The Detroit Lions might be in the midst of an all-out war at the top of the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Lions currently possess the No. 6 and No. 18 overall picks in the first round. Considering the team has plenty of draft capital, a trade up to the No. 3 overall pick isn’t out of the question.
If trading up is in consideration for general manager Brad Holmes, Adam Schefter’s latest report could back the Lions off of the idea.
Schefter reports that at least six teams have inquired about the Arizona Cardinals’ third overall pick.
What sets Detroit apart from the other teams looking to trade up is that the Lions would likely move up to take a top defensive talent such as Alabama’s Will Anderson.
Anderson was recently mocked to the Lions in The Athletic’s latest mock draft. Detroit traded up to nab the best linebacker in the draft to do so.
Meanwhile, the others interested in Arizona’s selection would all be looking to move up for a quarterback. The level of desperation for organizations in search of a franchise quarterback is significantly higher than that of the Lions, who are looking to add a dynamic defensive piece.
Teams vying to trade up for a signal caller will almost certainly be willing to give up more draft capital in exchange for the pick. Because of this, the Lions would probably come up short in a bidding war. Detroit can sit back at No. 6 and still find a top rookie who can provide an instant impact.
There are plenty of smoke and mirrors in the weeks leading up to the draft, but Schefter has a proven track record. If there is an all-out arms race to acquire the No. 3 overall pick, Detroit is probably best served by holding onto its two first-round picks rather than mortgaging the future for a defender.
