Navigating all the Detroit Lions injuries

Ok everyone, let's all take a deep breath. What a Week 2 that was for not just the Detroit Lions, but the entire NFL. It seemed liek everyone got hurt. Anytime you looked, someone was getting carted off the field. It's hard to know for sure because there's 32 teams and I only cover one of them, but it feels like the Lions had more injuries than anyone.
With that in mind, I want to go through the injuries and do a little bit of primer for those who didn't know about the injuries and also explain what they mean for the team itself. Let's jump in.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Torn Pectoral Muscle

You might have missed this one becasue after Gardner-Johnson was helped off the field on Sunday, he went back into the game. You could see though when was being taken off that he was pointing to his chest and shoulder area.
Now we know that he will be out indefinitely and possibly the season. You can expect Gardner-Johnson to see doctors on Tuesday to see how bad it is before the Lions place him on injured reserve, but that seems like a forgone conclusion at this point. It just depends on whether it's short term IR or season ending IR. Regardless of which one it is, that will open up a roster spot for the Lions.
Roster spots open: 1
James Houston: Fibula

There’s a video out there of what happened to Houston and it’s hard to watch if you don’t like seeing people get hurt. Let’s just say you can definitely see where he gets hurt. Houston is expected to be out for six to eight weeks at this point. the Lions haven’t done it yet, but they will surely be placing him on short term IR. That will open up a roster spot.
Roster spots open: 2
Josh Paschal: Knee

Paschal got hurt at practice last Thursday. We don’t know the exact nature of the injury other than the injury is with his knee. He was placed on IR last Friday. With short term IR, you have to miss four games. Paschal has three games left to go before he can return.
Roster spots open: 3
Khalil Dorsey: Illness

This one is weird. Dorsey isn’t injured, he has an illness and has been put on the IR becasue of it. We don’t know what that illness is and we aren’t about to speculate about it, it’s just odd because I’ve never seen a player hit the IR with an illness before. He can return in three games.
Roster spots open: 3 (The Lions signed Chase Lucas to the 53 man roster on Friday)
Emmanuel Moseley: ACL and hamstring

Moseley was able to make his return to the team, after suffering a season ending ACL injury in 2022, just before the regular season and the hopes were high that he would be able to make his season debut in at least Week 2, but then he missed practice all week with a hamstring injury.
Dan Campbell said on Tuesday morning that he didn't feel good about Moseley's chances of playing in Week 3.
Taylor Decker: Ankle

It’s hard to know what to think of Decker’s injury right now. The ankles are just so important at this position and the Lions might just be taking it easy with him until he’s 100% Either that or it’s worse than originally thought. He missed all of last week and according to Dan Campbell, he could miss all of this week too.
David Montgomery: Thigh

Montgomery looked to be in a lot of pain on Sunday after he went down with a thigh injury. Those thigh bruises can really mess you up. It’s such a sensitive area and those muscles play an important part in running and pushing forward. The original thought was that Montgomery could be out for a couple weeks, but on Monday Campbell told us that he is day to day. Not saying he’ll play Sunday, but there’s a better chance he does than everyone on this list.
Halapoulivaati Vaitai: Knee

All we really know about this one is that he could be out for a while, but he won’t be added to the IR. So it’s maybe bad enough to keep him out of this Sunday’s matchup with the Falcons, but not bad enough to be held out for four weeks.
Lions’ Jared Goff is an elite NFL quarterback, here’s why
So on Sunday night I decided to make a bit of a proclamation about Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. He's been outstanding for a while now and I think we've reached the point where he's only going to get more expensive with every game he plays. It's time to extend Goff soon. Like right now. […]
