San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been the talk of the football world this week after he was seen on video telling Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels that the 49ers told him that they don't want him back.
This prompted a bunch of ideas on where Aiyuk could land. The Detroit Lions were of course one of the destinations that were brought up since there's a lot of questions about the team's depth at the position right now after the loss of Josh Reynolds. NFL Analyst Brett Kollman has a suggestion for the Lions that would mean trading away one of the team's future stars.
Lions get: Brandon Aiyuk
49ers get: Jameson Williams and an unspecified draft pick.
I have to tell you, at first glance I don't hate it. The Lions spent a first-round pick on Jameson Williams in 2022 and the expectation is that he's going to be a major part of the Lions offense in 2024. But we haven't seen that from him yet. We don't really know if he can do it.
We do know that Aiyuk can do it though. He's been one of the better receivers in the league for the past two seasons and could be a for sure number two guy in Detroit.
With that said, if Jameson Williams can reach his potential, he could be a much better receiver than Aiyuk and he would come at a significantly lower cost for the immediate future. Aiyuk is going to cost a lot. According to NFL insiders, the 49ers do, in fact, want Aiyuk back. They just don't want to pay him what he wants.
That means that Aiyuk is going to be looking for a lot of money on this new contract and if he wants anything near Justin Jefferson money, there's just no way the Lions would, or should, be interested in making this move. The Lions just made Amon-Ra St. Brown one of the highest paid receivers in the league. To add another high salary like that with a guy that likely wants more than St. Brown and produces less than St. Brown would be crazy for the Lions to do.
At this point, Detroit has a good situation with Williams in which they could pick up his fifth-year option after the season if he balls out or sign him to a extension that's both player friendly and team friendly next offseason.
It's an interesting suggestion, but it's a move the Lions should stay out of.
4 Lions who have the most to prove at training camp in order to play a big role in 2024
The Detroit Lions will be heading to training camp a few weeks from now and it's at camp that some players are going to have to really prove themselves if they hope to nail down spots on the roster or even play meaningful snaps if they do make the roster. This team is good now. […]
