The week started off with a report stating the NFL is currently investigating more players for betting on games in 2022 and now, on Friday, it's become clear a fifth Detroit Lions player is a part of the investigation.
Per The Athletic's Kalyn Kahler, the NFL is looking at whether or not a fifth Lions player violated the NFL's gambling policy. The player is currently unnamed since he is under investigation.
The NFL is investigating a fifth player on the 2022 Detroit Lions roster for a potential violation of the league’s gambling policy, league sources told The Athletic.
The Athletic is not naming the player at this time because the investigation is ongoing. The player currently under investigation was not a prominent member of the 2022 team. He has yet to be interviewed by the league’s investigator. The player’s agent declined to comment when reached by The Athletic, as did spokespersons for the NFL, NFLPA and the Lions. – Kalyn Kahler, The Athletic
Kahler notes the player under investigation was not a prominent member of the 2022 squad, which should give fans some comfort. The NFL has gone on the record in the past, saying "it educates more than 17,000 people annually, providing training on its gambling policy to all players, coaches and staff employed by all 32 teams, as well as league personnel and stakeholders."
So, there is infrastructure in place to help prevent this from happening. The players just have to make sure they understand the parameters and obviously, they have to make sure they don't violate them.
"We are very explicit in the training to explain that if you are involved with the NFL, you can never bet on the NFL," David Highhill, a vice president and general manager who oversees sports betting for the NFL, recently told ESPN.com.
Multiple players, assistant coaches, and team employees have violated the policy since the Supreme Court made gambling legal on May 14, 2018.
Even if the current Lions player wasn't a big contributor, here's to hoping this trend of players violating the gambling policy dies a quick death.
