Per The Score's Jordan Schultz, the Detroit Lions will open up its season -and the 2023 season- on the road against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

It's a major nod toward the improvement the Lions showed over the back half of the 2022 season and the moves they've made this offseason. Dan Campbell and co. currently have things humming and they're positioned to make big moves in 2023. Especially with Aaron Rodgers finally out of the picture.

Obviously, this won't be an easy matchup, by any means. However, playing the Chiefs right out of the gate is a great litmus test for Campbell's squad. Hopefully the Lions get off to a much quicker start than they did last year. Beating the Chiefs in Week 1 would certainly signal yet another improvement for the Lions if they were to win on opening night.

These two teams have met a total of 14 times in the past and the Chiefs lead the series, 9-5. They've played each other just four times since 2007 and both teams hold 2-2 records over that span, with the Chiefs winning the last two matchups. Most noticeably, the 34-30 barnburner back in 2019 where Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs on a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter.

The Lions are on the rise and the NFL has taken notice. Now, Detroit gets a chance to prove it does in fact have the right to run with the big dogs.
