The Detroit Lions and Teddy Bridgewater have been flirting with each other for a while now. The Lions offered Bridgewater a strong contract back in April before the NFL Draft, but nothing ever came of it. After the Lions drafted Hendon Hooker, most assumed that was that until the Lions hosted Bridgewater for a visit on Monday. The two parties have now agreed to a deal.
You had to believe that it would be a short term deal for Bridgewater. At this point, he's sort of a hired gun that teams bring in as one of the best insurance policies in the league. The bigger reason is that the Lions have Hendon Hooker and he should be able to take over that number two spot in Detroit starting next season.
Speaking of Hooker, he will have a wealth of brains to pick things out of in his rookie year. He'll have former Pro Bowl quarterback Mark Brunell, current Pro Bowl quarterback Jared Goff and 2015 Pro Bowler Teddy Bridgewater to serve as mentors for him. Most quarterbacks don't get a third of that in their rookie year.
As for seeing Bridgewater play in a Lions uniform, outside of the preseason, you hope you never do. Although if he has to play, his are the safest hands the Lions could be in when it comes to backups. He's what you call a premium backup quarterback for a reason. Teams can win with him in the lineup.
Adding Bridgewater would say a lot about the Lions immediate plans
The Lions are going for it
