Michigan Panthers kicker Jake Bates had the football world talking when he nailed a 64-yard game winning field goal in the closing seconds of the Panthers win over the St. Louis  Battlehawks a few months back.

Pairing him with the Lions made a ton of sense at the time since they had been doing their due diligence on kickers ahead of the draft and Bates plays in their building already. Well, there's good news for Lions fans that were interested. The Lions are expected to sign Bates on Tuesday.

The Lions were among multiple teams that reached out. The Packers, Commanders and Ravens were interested, but ultimately the Lions won out.

Now the Lions kicker competition is going to be an all out war. Bates will compete with the incumbent Michael Badgley and undrafted rookie James Turner. The latter had a very impressive spring.

Bates has cooled off in recent weeks and has begun to miss some kicks. So the original thought that he would just come right in and get the job is not a thing anymore. We'll see what he can do come Training camp time.
