Edge rusher day continues for us here AtoZ Detroit. This time we'll be talking about Jaguars Pro Bowler Josh Allen joining the Detroit Lions.

The Pros

Allen had a huge 2023 in Jacksonville. He recorded 17.5 sacks, 90 pressures 54 hurries and 17 quarterbacks hits. This was by far Allen's best career season since he had a big rookie year. Allen has not missed a game in two seasons and has been playing a Pro Bowl level for a while. At 26-years-old, Allen can be a long term piece for the Lions to have across from Aidan Hutchinson.

The Con's

Not sure there's much to complain about here. The big concern for me is the difference in year to year production. I mentioned he played all 17 games in 2022 as well, but he had 10 less sacks. Was 17.5 a fluke? How much are the Lions willing to spend to find out?

What would he cost?

It's not going to be cheap at all. Our on staff cap specialists project that a deal for Allen would be four years, $110 million with annual per year salary of $27.5 million. $85 million of that would be guaranteed.

Could it happen?

More than anything it would be the Jaguars that would hold this thing back. If they can't get a deal agreed too, they'll surely look to use the franchise tag on Allen to keep him around until they can make a deal.

From the Lions side of things, that is an awful lot of money. I don't doubt that the Lions will spend this offseason, but I don't think they'll be looking to spend that much. Especially after they extend Jared Goff, possibly another player and then bring back some free agents of their own.
