As a rookie, Tolbert only played 89 snaps, tallying 2 catches for 12 yards, showing that the Cowboys clearly didn't trust him yet. However, the 2023 preseason has been great for Tolbert, as he is starting to flash some of the great traits that the Cowboys saw in him a year ago.

After observing his preseason games, my level of assurance in Tolbert's role as the fourth wide receiver has notably grown. He has successfully caught six passes, accumulating a total of 95 yards and securing a touchdown from eight targeted passes.

The Cowboys selected Jalen Tolbert using their third-round pick in the 2022 draft, but his rookie season proved to be disappointing. He participated in only 89 snaps, managing just two receptions for 12 yards out of three targets.

Clearly, Dallas didn't have enough confidence in him to put him on the field as a rookie. In his second year, it was expected that he would secure a roster spot, yet he needed to make significant progress and demonstrate his abilities to earn playing time.

Following the first two preseason games, my confidence in Tolbert as the fourth wide receiver has significantly increased. He has made six receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown on eight targets. His well-rounded skill set has impressed me, aligning with what initially made me optimistic about him as a prospect.

He possesses the size and ball skills to excel in contested catches while also displaying fluidity as a route runner. This suggests he has the potential to develop into a strong wide receiver, potentially alongside CeeDee Lamb.

Looking at some specific plays, during a quick slant against cover two, Tolbert's concentration helped him secure the ball even after it was tipped. He displayed skillful maneuvering in a China 7 concept, creating space and capitalizing on a defensive hesitation.

In another instance, he executed a go route against man coverage with precision, adjusting for a back-shoulder fade. Additionally, his release tactics and separation were evident during a quick slant against cover three, indicating his progress.

While preseason performances should be taken cautiously, Tolbert's development is promising. Although the Cowboys won't heavily rely on him this year unless injuries occur, his potential as a long-term solution for wide receiver 2 is looking positive.
