Nick Herbig will be a STUD…if the Steelers use him right: Film Breakdown
In this film breakdown, we take a look at Steelers 4th round pick, Nick Herbig, an edge rusher out of Wisconsin.
Nick Herbig is a freak athlete who had an incredible college career at Wisconsin. However, he is a huge question mark, heading into the NFL, as he is a position tweener, fitting somewhere between EDGE and an off-ball linebacker. If Pittsburgh is able to figure out his best fit, Herbig could easily turn into a stud that can affect the ball from many different areas. He led all pass rushers in this class in pass-rush win rate, and had outstanding numbers for his career. Herbig has less-than impressive size, with his physical traits being well below average. However, he has an explosive first step that he combines with great bend, making him a strong speed rusher. He's a great closer after beating his man, and usually gets the QB to the ground if he gets past his blocker. In run defense, he's a heat-seeking missile, consistently making great pursuit tackles and solid stops at the time.
Strengths:
- Speed and Agility: Herbig possesses good speed and agility, allowing him to quickly pursue ball carriers and make tackles in open space.
- Tackling: He has shown strong tackling skills, demonstrating the ability to wrap up opponents and bring them down effectively.
- Pass Rushing: Herbig has displayed a knack for rushing the passer and putting pressure on the opposing quarterback. His speed and agility can make it difficult for offensive linemen to contain him.
- Football IQ: Herbig has been praised for his high football intelligence, including his ability to read and react to plays quickly.
Weaknesses:
- Size and Strength: One potential area of improvement for Herbig could be adding size and strength to better handle blocks from larger offensive linemen.
- Coverage Skills: While Herbig has shown promise as a pass rusher and run defender, he may need further development in coverage skills, such as reading routes and defending against pass-catching targets.
- Play Recognition: While Herbig has demonstrated good football IQ, there may be room for improvement in his ability to quickly recognize and diagnose offensive plays.
