Why Paris Johnson is ABSOLUTELY the BEST OT in the 2023 Draft Class: Film Breakdown
In this film breakdown, we take a look at Ohio State LT Paris Johnson Jr.
Johnson Jr. is a physical specimen, with freakish athleticism for someone his size. Throughout college, he proved that he can excel in any blocking scheme, passing or running, and has the aggression to dominate opponents, whether at the line of scrimmage or in the open field. His only downside in my eyes, is that aggression, which will lead to unsportsmanlike penalties on occasion. However, you'd rather have a tackle who goes too long, rather than one that pulls up early. He should be a high 1st round pick, and undoubtedly the #1 tackle taken in the NFL Draft.
Strengths:
- Size and strength: Johnson Jr. has excellent size (6'7", 305 pounds) and strength, making him a powerful blocker who can dominate at the point of attack.
- Footwork and technique: Johnson Jr. has good footwork and technique for a player of his size, allowing him to move well and maintain good balance in pass protection and run blocking.
- Versatility: While Johnson Jr. primarily plays as a tackle, he has the ability to play at guard as well, which adds to his value as a prospect.
- Physicality: Johnson Jr. plays with a high level of physicality and intensity, which allows him to overpower defenders and finish blocks.
Weaknesses:
- Hand placement: Johnson Jr. could improve his hand placement in both pass protection and run blocking, which would make him an even more effective blocker.
- Lateral quickness: While Johnson Jr. is a good athlete for his size, he could improve his lateral quickness in order to better handle speed rushers and make blocks at the second level.
- Overreliance on strength: While Johnson Jr.'s strength is a major asset, he could benefit from developing more finesse in his blocking technique, especially in pass protection.
