Colton Dowell is a great athlete, standing tall at 6'3 212 lbs, clocking a 4.42 in the 40 yard dash at his pro day. According to the tape, Dowell actually uses that athleticism that he shows in testing, and appears to be a solid vertical threat, boasting a 63.2% contested catch rate in 2022, 2nd best among this draft class. Dowell had solid, but not great stats in college, and from what I can tell, there was a lot left to be desired, due to bad quarterback play and an offensive line that didn't give the offense time. Dowell was frequently getting open downfield, the ball just didn't get to him for one reason or another. He needs to get better at using his size to his advantage, and also needs to develop a more complete route tree if he wants to stick around on an NFL roster. However, I think he will get a roster spot and could probably develop into a solid WR3 for the Titans.

Strengths:

  1. Physical Dominance: Boasts a plus size/speed combination outside and is an explosive leaper.
  2. Production: Posted an impressive 112 yards receiving against Tennessee in 2022.
  3. Agility: Possesses exceptional footwork and acceleration to outrun press coverage upon release.
  4. Ball Tracking: Demonstrates steady positioning and effective adjustments during the ball-tracking phase.
  5. Contested-Catch Ability: Displays above-average toughness when competing for catches in contested situations.

Weaknesses:

  1. Route-Finishing: May require additional physicality throughout the route to improve performance.
  2. Route Transition: Demonstrates slowness in gearing down and opening up on comebacks.
  3. Post-Catch Movement: Tends to exhibit excessive stutter-stepping after making short catches, affecting momentum.
