Why CJ Stroud is NOT QB1 for the 2023 NFL Draft: Film Breakdown
In this film breakdown, we take a look at Ohio State QB CJ Stroud. Stroud was a Heisman finalist, after a NCAA-best 37 TDs, and leading Ohio State to the CFB Playoff.
In this video, we take a look at some of the struggles Stroud has, and why he could struggle in the NFL. He's incredibly talented, and has all the potential for improvement, but as of now, his tape clearly shows that he isn't the best QB in this draft class.
Strengths:
- Arm strength: Stroud has a strong arm and is capable of making all the throws required at the college level.
- Accuracy: He has demonstrated impressive accuracy on his throws, particularly on deep passes where he has shown good touch and ball placement.
- Poise: Stroud appears to be a confident player who stays calm under pressure, allowing him to make plays in critical situations.
- Mobility: While not known as a running quarterback, Stroud has shown the ability to move well in and out of the pocket and make plays with his feet when needed.
- Football IQ: Stroud has a high football IQ and is said to be a quick learner, which has helped him adapt to the college game quickly.
Weaknesses:
- Surprisingly Immobile: Good timed speed and agility for a QB, but often proves unable to escape a heavy rush.
- Untested: Has played in a very QB-friendly scheme and has been surrounded by NFL-level talent during both his seasons at Ohio State, but remains mostly untested against serious adversity.
- Inconsistent: Suffered when under a heavy rush, which could become a major issue at the next level where he won't have the benefit of playing behind a top-level offensive line.
