I was lower on Julius Brents than most people, however I think that the Colts are the perfect fit for him. Brents is a big body that tested well at the Combine overall, despite clocking a fairly slow 40-yard dash. The short area quickness is great, but the lack of top end speed gives him poor recovery speed, which can be a major issue. Brents is a strong run defender, and has the ideal build and skillset for a press corner.

The elite short area quickness that he showed at the Combine just doesn't show up on tape in my opinion, which is a big concern. His tape shows a lack of fluidity while defending short routes, and receivers consistently getting separation on him at the route break. I think while he has a ways to go to be a solid corner, the Colts' defensive scheme will help mask some of his weaknesses, while highlighting his strengths.

Strengths:

  1. Size and Length: Brents stands at an impressive 6'2" tall, providing him with excellent length and the ability to match up against taller receivers. His size allows him to disrupt passing lanes and make it challenging for quarterbacks to complete throws in his direction.
  2. Physicality: Brents showcases physicality in press coverage, using his length and strength to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage. He can disrupt the timing of routes and throw off the rhythm of opposing passing games.
  3. Athleticism: Brents possesses good speed and agility for his size, enabling him to keep up with receivers in man coverage and recover quickly if he gets beat initially. His athleticism allows him to make plays on the ball and contest passes effectively.
  4. Ball Skills: Brents demonstrates solid ball skills, showcasing an ability to locate and make plays on the football. He has the potential to generate turnovers and disrupt passing attacks through interceptions and pass breakups.

Weaknesses:

  1. Injuries: Brents has dealt with injuries throughout his college career, which have limited his playing time and development. Staying healthy and managing any lingering injury concerns will be crucial for him to reach his full potential.
  2. Consistency: Like many young players, Brents can benefit from improving his consistency in coverage. This includes maintaining proper technique, reading routes effectively, and avoiding mental lapses that can lead to blown assignments.
  3. Recovery Speed: While Brents possesses solid speed, there may be moments where he can struggle to recover if initially beaten by faster receivers. Enhancing his ability to close the gap and catch up to receivers after a separation could help him become an even more reliable cornerback.
  4. Run Support: Brents could refine his skills in run support, including shedding blocks and making tackles in the open field. Developing his ability to be a reliable tackler and support the defense against the run will further enhance his overall effectiveness as a cornerback.
