The Green Bay Packers shocked everyone on Thursday night by trading star wide receiver Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders for draft picks.
Well, they shocked almost everyone.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who just recently returned to the Packers with a new (large) contract, knew while he was negotiating with Green Bay that Adams wasn't returning in 2022.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday evening that Rodgers knew that the situation between Adams and Green Bay was "too far gone".
That's interesting on several levels. It was assumed that Rodgers and Adams were a package deal. There was even talk of Rodgers and Adams possibly heading to the Denver Broncos to play together (which would've required Green Bay trading both of them, or letting Adams walk in free agency).
The fact that Rodgers knew Adams wasn't coming back and still signed with Green Bay shows that Rodgers probably never truly considered playing for a team other than the Packers.
Rodgers has praised Adams a lot over the last couple of months. It's certainly a strange outcome for the two players.
Though, it now appears that it was Rodgers who was enthralled with Adams and not so much the other way around. Green Bay was reportedly set to match what the Raiders offered, but Adams didn't want to play with the Packers anymore.
It'll be interesting to see where the Packers turn for wide receiver help now that Adams is heading to the AFC West.
The Packers are still a playoff team, but losing Adams certainly hurts their Super Bowl chances.
