The Green Bay Packers are reportedly signing former New York Giants cornerback Zyon Gilbert.
It's not been reported yet the type of deal. But as Gilbert is a young player and was a free agent, it's presumably for the practice squad.
Zyon Gilbert went undrafted last year and signed with the Giants right thereafter. He spent most of last season on the practice squad, but appeared on three regular season games.
He played a total of 73 defensive snaps and 28 special teams snaps. Gilbert had a 69.6 defensive grade from PFF last year, including a 76.3 pass rushing grade being used as an eventual blitzer — he had one sack and two pressures.
Gilbert spent this year's training camp and preseason with the Giants again, but he didn't make the 53-man roster and wasn't re-signed to their practice squad.
According to his Relative Athletic Score, he has good size, elite explosion, great speed, and poor agility.
The Packers have five cornerbacks on their 53-man roster: Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Eric Stokes, Keisean Nixon, and Carrington Valentine. However, Alexander (back) and Stokes (hamstring) are handling injuries. The team also has Corey Ballentine, Innis Gaines, and recently signed Anthony Johnson on the practice squad.
How can the Packers improve their run defense during the season?
Green Bay has been bad stopping the run, and it’s hard to get better during the season
