The Houston Texans have added several new starters this offseason, including at the quarterback position.
With CJ Stroud set to take over as the starting QB, many have wondered if previous starter Davis Mills' days in Houston were numbered. However, that may not be the case after all.
Per NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Davis Mills is "unavailable" in trade talks.
While it is true that Mills will no longer be the starter, it does not seem like the Texans are looking to get rid of the QB. Per Wilson, "teams have interest," in Mills, but he is not available.
The Texans also signed veteran Case Keenum this offseason to serve as a mentor to the rookie QB. With Keenum considered a lock for this reason, it seemed that Mills would have no place on the roster.
Mills does provide the Texans with a solid backup. Keenum is 35 years old and several seasons removed from any meaningful playing time. Perhaps the team feels uncomfortable having Keenum as the primary backup.
While Mills struggled as the starter, the blame does not fall solely on his shoulders. Mills was thrown into a tough situation with a talent-deprived roster in the post-Deshaun Watson era. Over 26 games as the starter, Mills ended up completing 63.6% of his passes for 5,782 yards with 33 TDs and 25 INTs.
Mills is under contract for two more seasons making slightly over $1 million per season. That low cost makes Mills an even more attractive option, as several teams could still use a QB.
Things could obviously change before the season, but as of now, expect Mills to be in Houston for at least one more season.
