The Houston Texans continue building upon a very strong start to free agency. Knowing fully well that the roster needed a lot of work beyond the quarterback position, the front office has done a good job raising the supporting cast around the position.
The Texans are signing TE Dalton Schultz and RB Devin Singletary, reported Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network respectively.
Let's start with the tight end. Schultz is signing a one-year deal worth up to $9 million. That's a steal for Houston as they're getting a 26-year-old with high production over the last few years at a much more lower rate than many expected him to agree to.
Schultz bet on his market when turning down an offer from the Cowboys in 2022 and riding out the franchise tag. After a year of playing banged up, he bets on himself once more with this one-year deal.
Schultz is a reliable target who knows how to work underneath. Chances are what cost him a shot a big-time deal is the fact that he isn't a guy who dictates coverage like Travis Kelce for the Kansas City Chiefs or George Kittle for the San Francisco 49ers.
But Schultz is a very productive tight end and was one of Dak Prescott's best friends in Dallas. His best year happened in 2021 when he caught 78 passes for 808 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Texans are also adding RB Devin Singletary, who has averaged 788 rushing yards per season and 4.7 yards per attempt in the Buffalo Bills' pass-happy offense since 2019. Singletary has also averaged 36 catches per year throughout his career.
He joins a Texans' running back room that includes Dameon Pierce and Mike Boone.
