Colts sign quarterback in free agency
An important move is made.
The Indianapolis Colts are widely expected to draft a quarterback with their first-round pick. It would make sense, given the fact that the Colts have yet to find a franchise signal caller since Andrew Luck retired.
In the meantime though, the Colts have added a passer to the roster through free agency. Indianapolis is bringing in veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew, a move that first-year head coach Shane Steichen undoubtedly had a huge hand in.
Minshew has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Colts. The contract is worth $3.5 million and gives Minshew another opportunity in a new place.
Steichen and Minshew are very familiar with each other, a big reason why this deal was likely completed. In Philadelphia, Steichen coached Minshew for the past two seasons with the Eagles.
That familiarity is important as Steichen looks to implement his own culture and offense in Indianapolis. Minshew started four games over the past two years for the Eagles and provides the Colts with a potential bridge quarterback as they figure out the future at the position.
Minshew has thrown for 6,632 yards and 44 touchdowns to 15 interceptions in his NFL career. Under Steichen, he threw for 1,102 yards and seven scores in limited opportunities.
It's also worth noting that this brings Minshew back to the division where he began his career at. He made a name for himself while with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Perhaps he gets a shot to play against his former team while in Indianapolis.
The experience and knowledge of the offensive scheme makes this signing a no-brainer for the Colts. This is a move that should help right now and into the future at the quarterback position.
