The fairy tale era of Jimmy Garoppolo as the new starter for the Las Vegas Raiders lasted all but five minutes.

On Monday, Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels explained that though Garoppolo was heralded as the franchise-saving signal caller, the Raiders are still open to using an early draft selection on a quarterback, should one that they like be available at pick No. 7 overall in the NFL Draft.

"I think we would take the best player," McDaniels said via NFL.com. "We've kind of said that since we came here. I think we think that's the right way to go. [General manager Dave Ziegler] and I both believe in that: Take the best football player. It always makes your football team better."

Throughout the pre-draft process, the Raiders have been linked to numerous quarterbacks. From C.J. Stoud, who many doubt will be available at seven, to Anthony Richardson, the Raiders may have a veteran signal-caller, but McDaniels wants to add more to that room.

The Raiders' head coach also didn't rule out continuing to use free agency to bring in a quarterback. He explained that Las Vegas owed it to itself to do the due diligence necessary to check off all its boxes when it came to bringing in the quarterback of the future.

"I'd say there's a chance we're going to end up adding to the quarterback room in free agency here, continuing to move forward, and then also we're looking at every guy in the draft, too," McDaniels said. "So we're doing our work. We're doing our due diligence. We'll see how the board falls."

Garoppolo, though talented, is also 31 years old and has a checkered injury history. The chances of him being a long-term solution to the Raiders' quarterback quarry remain slim. But he may serve as a nice bridge quarterback between eras as McDaniels attempts to shepherd the team back into relevancy.

But with the Garoppolo signing, what the Raiders did land was continuity. The two worked together when McDaniels was in New England, and McDaniels feels as though Garoppolo has played in enough big games to be an asset to the Raiders for the time being, the coach said.

It has been a quarterback-dominated offseason for the Raiders, who released long-time starter, Derek Carr, who went on to sign with the New Orleans Saints.

As the offseason wears on and the NFL Draft approaches, it is clear that McDaniels isn't ruling out adding an additional signal caller by either going the young route at pick seven or bringing in a veteran to compete with the often-injured Garoppolo. The news of Lamar Jackson requesting a trade also throws an interesting wrench into the Raiders' plans.

Regardless of how everything plays out, McDaniels wants a strong quarterback room. The only thing that isn't decided is the names that will be in there.
