Taylor Heinicke isn't a quarterback that will sell jerseys and bring title expectations. But he is a quarterback that the Las Vegas Raiders can use.

And as a free agent with ties to the organization, signing Heinicke is also something that makes sense following the Raiders' release of long-time starter Derek Carr.

In nine games in 2022, Heinicke threw 12 touchdowns to six interceptions. He tallied 1,859 yards and completed 62 percent of his passes. Heinicke wasn't a franchise-changing quarterback, but he was serviceable.

Throughout his NFL career, the relationship that has defined much of Heinicke's run is his tie to Scott Turner, the former offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders. Turner is now in Las Vegas, meaning he has some familiarity with what Heinicke can do as a quarterback.

It is also on the record that head coach Josh McDaniels would prefer a veteran quarterback instead of a rookie who needs time to develop. Heinicke fits that mold. He has 24 regular season starts and holds a record of 12-11-1.

Heinicke won't blow anyone away with generational arm talent. But he is a quarterback who takes risks, manages the game, and comes at an affordable price. If the Raiders strike out on the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes, a move for Heinicke makes more sense for the Raiders than drafting a quarterback.

With the number of offensive weapons in place, dropping Heinicke into a starting role with Las Vegas makes the team competitive. It wouldn't necessarily be an upgrade from Carr, but sometimes franchises have to take a step back in order to move forward. Heinicke in a Raiders uniform would represent that ideal.
