The Las Vegas Raiders do not have the answer at quarterback this season. They have three guys who are average or slightly below it, with Aidan O'Connell still having the best collection of showings as a fourth-round rookie.
This was a huge emphasis in the offseason. A ton of fans wanted the Raiders to take a quarterback in the draft, and they did, just now, as high as some wanted. When you look at what guys like C.J. Stroud are doing, it makes you wonder if the Raiders could have traded up.
O'Connell has had two really good shows of what he can do in this offense as a maximum potential guy. But he is a rookie. So, the mistakes are going to come, and boy, did they on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. He is not the reason the offense was bad, but he certainly deserves some responsibility.
O'Connell had three interceptions against the Dolphins and easily played the worst game he has played so far this season. Yet, the Raiders still almost won. The team isn't worried about the rookie. In fact, they are perfectly rallying around him.
"Aiden's a young quarterback in his 4th start, so we believe in him fully…he made a lot of really good plays," Max Crosby said in the locker room. "There are probably some plays that he wants back. I know he's super critical, and that's what you want."
Crosby is not the only guy to say something about O'Connell, either. Davante Adams said they aren't freaking out about what O'Connell did. That's exactly what you want to hear as a fan. But, even better, I'm sure that's exactly what O'Connell wants to hear as a rookie to help get his confidence back. If he knows that the team still has confidence in him, then he is instantly feeling better about himself moving forward.
Like Crosby said, he was in his fourth start ever. He showed some positives, like the last drive to get down the field, before the interception, of course, where he found Renfrow a few times, found Jakobi Meyers, and so on. There is a lot to be positive about.
