The Las Vegas Raiders are wasting away a perfect opportunity on defense. What does that mean? Well, they have one of the best defensive players in the league, and stats show that Maxx Crosby is putting together a defensive player of the year performance early in the 2023 season; however, his team is not helping his case whatsoever.

In the NFL, when you want to win an award, most of the time, you have to have team success. Most of these awards are individual; however, team success determines how good that player is when the voters vote. In Maxx Crosby's case, defensive player of the year is the same exact way. If his team isn't great defensively or good at all in terms of overall record, he won't be recognized as such when he should be. Crosby is off to an amazing start. He's not getting any recognition for it because of how his team plays.

According to Pro Football Focus, Maxx Crosby had the best Week 4 of any defender in the league, which is crazy when you think about what Khalil Mack did for the Los Angeles Chargers on the other side. Mack had six sacks in one game, a forced fumble, and a pass deflection, and led his team in tackles.

However, PFF thinks that Crosby is better.

PFF does their own grading for every single player in the league, and they graded Crosby's Week 4 at a 93.6, which is the best of any defender in the league. Mack was right behind him with a 92.3.

PFF also graded Crosby as the fifth-best edge rusher this season at 91.6. He sits just behind Nick Bosa, DeMarcus Lawrence, Myles Garrett, and Micah Parsons.

Crosby is on pace to have 17 sacks this year, which would likely lead the league unless someone else just goes crazy. If there was any year he was good enough to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, it was this year.

But, the team is wasting a perfect opportunity.
