Raiders Dave Ziegler talks 2022 season on Bussin' with the Boys
The Las Vegas Raiders general manager broke down the real reason why the team struggled so much in the 2022 season.
The Las Vegas Raiders didn't have the season we thought they would. In fact, it was almost the exact opposite. They finished 6-11 when a lot of people saw the team going 11-6. This Raiders team had a shaky offense that wasn't consistent and just a bad overall defense.
But, there has to be something we are missing, right? Why would a collection of so many good players on offense not work, in an offensive system that has been proven to work in New England? There is a reason why it didn't work, and general manager Dave Ziegler explained why on a recent podcast.
"At the end of the day, we weren’t good enough," Ziegler said on Bussin' with the Boys. "That’s the fact of the matter to win those games. And so, I think, when you look at them, a lot of games in football and a lot of our games this year, there’s three or four plays in each game that didn’t go our way. And so you start to dig in: ‘Why? Why didn’t they go that way?’ And again, some of them — there’s a lot of different reasons.
"I would say the one thing that I think is important to have to be able to — I’ll say it like this: I think the thing that’s important to win those close games is you have to have a group of 11 guys who, in those critical moments, can all execute their assignment and be synchronized with each other. And I think at times, we just, we weren’t able to do that. For whatever reason. And there could be a lot of reasons for that…"
The Raiders had too much disconnect between the players, coaches, and anyone else who was in the building. It seemed like no one was ever on the same page, which is also a huge reason one of the best, if not the best quarterback to ever play for the Raiders just got let go.
And yes, he holds many of their records so Carr is definitely in that conversation.
It just didn't make sense though all season long. We never got a good answer on it either, so it felt kind of good to hear Ziegler say what he said.
This is something the Raiders have to fix for the 2023 season. They cannot have another season that is even remotely close to the one they had this last year. If they do, it's possible we could see some big-name players like Davante Adams gone.
