Even with the poor play of the Las Vegas Raiders as of late, they somehow still have a chance to make the playoffs. It doesn't help that their captain, and leader on offense, have been playing badly too.
This was supposed to be the year that Derek Carr shut all the haters up. He finally got an elite receiver, one he had a relationship with from college. Oh, and a guy that was his best friends, and he still has played average at times, and sometimes below average.
The last few games, have not been his best, to say the least, and now he has some heat coming his way from the fans and media.
"Yeah. There's a lot of reasons obviously for that. It's never on one person," McDaniels said. "That's our responsibility, my responsibility. At the end of the day, the passing game and the production of the passing game usually has a lot to do with how we protect, the routes we run, the ability to read the coverage together, throwing and catching.
"There's a lot that goes into that. I know that statistic gets applied to just one person, but certainly there's other factors. So, I mean, look that's not good enough. And for us to be able to win at this time of the year and be productive, offensively you have to throw the ball better than what we've thrown at times here in the last month and a half."
Carr has got to be better, as the leader of the team and a guy who is often looked at as the face of the franchise. There is no excuse now that he has his guy, and has all of his guys back from injury the last two games in Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow.
In his last five games, Carr has nine interceptions. Those are not the numbers of a guy who has been a starter in this league for a while. They also aren’t the numbers of a Pro Bowler.
I know there are only two games left, but if they want any shot at making the playoffs, Carr has to be better. If he isn’t, there could be a possibility the two sides live in from each other.
This is why people like playing for McDaniels though. I know his record may not speak for itself, but he is a guy that comes off as a players coach. This would only help back that theory up. McDaniels is going to be here a little longer than maybe we thought he would halfway through the season. So he may as well start getting the locker room now.
