Raiders, 49ers

The Las Vegas Raiders are, I think it's safe to say, in a very disappointing year. The start of the season saw the Raiders with some high hopes. I mean, why wouldn't there be after a playoff trip with a worse roster and an interim head coach?

Then add in the best receiver in football that has an extremely close relationship with the quarterback and you have yourself at least a playoff team. So we thought, that is.

Their former California Bay area neighbors are doing quite well, though. And, I'm sure the Raiders could learn a few things from the way they have done things the last few years.

“Yeah, I mean, they did it their way," McDaniels said. "And I think that anytime you take on an opportunity like this, you have a vision for what you eventually want it to get to. It's very difficult to get to that right away because you're spending a lot of time teaching everybody. And so, I think that what they've been able to do over a number of years is establish the type of people that they're looking for, establish the way they want to play in all three phases.

"And I think by now, now you see the fruits of the labor on the field. And like I said, there's very few times where you're watching them where it looks like they're not connected perfectly. They got 11 guys on the field that know what's being asked of them and they do it very well. So, it's a team."

The 49ers have done things their way for a very long time, and it seems as if the hire of Kyle Shanahan was the right one. San Francisco is a team that has a lot of history and success with that history.

Even late the 49ers have had some success. They were in the Super Bowl in 2019 and the conference championship last season. Not to mention this is a team that has dealt with injuries the last three years more than probably anyone.

I mean, just this year alone their first and second-string quarterbacks have been injured and out for the year, and they are doing all this with a seventh-round rookie quarterback. That right there is coaching and culture.

The Raiders need a little of both of those. Well, they need a lot. Hopefully, they can learn to emulate some of this stuff.
