On Thursday, the Miami Dolphins made its first major change to the coaching staff following a disappointing end to the 2022 season.

The Dolphins fired defensive coordinator Josh Boyer after three seasons at the helm of Miami’s defense, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Boyer was retained after the Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel as its head coach in February. However, Boyer’s defense did not meet the team’s expectations in 2022.

The Dolphins’ defense ranked 24th in scoring defense, allowing 23.5 points per game. Though Miami had the fourth-ranked run defense in football, it was the team’s 27th ranked pass defense that proved to be a liability down the stretch.

“I am grateful for Josh’s contributions this year and throughout his tenure with the Dolphins,” McDaniel wrote in a statement. “The defense made strides through the season, so coming to this decision was not easy, but ultimately I feel it is in the best long-term interests of the Miami Dolphins and the continued growth of our players and team.”

The Dolphins have also parted ways with safeties coach Steve Gregory, outside linebackers coach Ty Mckenzie and assistant linebackers coach Steve Ferentz. These moves allow McDaniel to go out and hire new defensive assistants that fit his philosophy moving forward.
