The Miami Dolphins have hired former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry. According to NFL Network's insider Tom Pelissero, Barry will be the linebackers coach and, most notably, run game coordinator.
The run game coordinator part of the title is at least curious because that was an extremely flawed area of his defense during his tenure in Green Bay. Between 2021 and 2023, with Barry as the coordinator, the Packers defense was 31st in rush EPA and 31st in rush success rate.
Track record
It's not exactly clear what Barry's responsibilities will be. Maybe the title is just a way to pay him more money, since he's coming of a stint with a higher-profile job. Barry has a positive track record as a position coach, and he will work with the Dolphins' linebackers.
Barry, 53 years old, has been in the NFL since 2000, when he got hired as the San Francisco 49ers' defensive quality control coach. Since then, he's been a linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (a period which included a Super Bowl championship), San Diego Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams. Each stop allowed him to be promoted to defensive coordinator — for the Detroit Lions, Washington, and Green Bay Packers. But as a coordinator, he wasn't so successful.
With the Rams between 2017 and 2020, Barry was an assistant head coach in addition to his linebackers coach title.
Staff
The Miami Dolphins are rebuilding their defensive coaching staff after the team and Vic Fangio mutually agreed to part ways. Anthony Campanile had been the linebackers coach for four seasons. Joe Barry will work under Anthony Weaver, who will be the coordinator after spending two seasons as the Baltimore Ravens assistant head coach and defensive line coach — Weaver was also the run game coordinator in 2021.
In addition to his interview with Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins, Joe Barry talked to Matt Eberflus about the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator position, but former Buffalo Bills assistant head coach and defensive line coach Eric Washington got the job.
