Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said to reporters recently that he was hoping to increase the quality of depth on the defensive line.  GM Chris Grier obliged that request quickly.

The Dolphins announced the addition of DT Da'Shawn Hand on Sunday afternoon.  DT Anthony Montalvo was waived to accommodate the addition.

Fangio met with the media on Friday and made it clear he's looking for players behind the starters on his defensive line to step up.

“We’re happy with Zach, Christian, and Raekwon,” Fangio said. “We need to find two other guys, three other guys to surface as the fourth, fifth, and sixth defensive linemen. And so far, nobody has done that. That’s an area we need to get better at.”

Now there's another candidate in the building to try to fill that role.

Hand was selected by the Lions in the 4th round of the 2018 NFL Draft.  The Alabama product started 8 of the 13 games he appeared in as a rookie, totaling 27 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 3 sack, and 2 forced fumbles.

That's been his most productive season, as he has started only 3 more games since his rookie season in between Detroit and Tennessee.  However, a significant reason is injury, as Hand has been placed on injured reserve six times in five seasons.  Hand suffered a quad injury early in the Titans' 2022 season opener that kept him out for the rest of the season.

Now, he will be looking for a fresh start with a team looking to stir up some competition in the back end of the Dolphins defensive line.  If he can buck his injury history, he might be just what his defensive coordinator has been looking for.
