The NFL's 53-man roster rule puts some teams to tough decisions.  The Miami Dolphins were no different this year.  Like many teams, they tried to sneak a young player through waivers to add him to the practice squad while he grows.

Unfortunately for them, someone else put a stop to those plans.

TE Elijah Higgins was claimed off waivers on Wednesday by the Arizona Cardinals.  The Dolphins released him on Tuesday afternoon as part of their roster cut down.  Being a rookie and not a vested veteran, he had to pass through waivers before the Dolphins could sign him to their practice squad.  Now, the Dolphins' most promising young pass catcher among their tight ends is headed west.

A big target at 6'3", 234 pounds, Higgins was primarily a wide receiver at Stanford.  However, the sixth-round draft pick was converted to a tight end with the hopes that he would be able to develop into the role.  In other words, he needed to continue to get bigger and stronger while working on his blocking skills.  However, his receiving skills are hard to deny.

It appears the Dolphins were not willing to let him work on developing the areas that he needed to improve while on the active roster, opting instead to try to let him do so on the practice squad.  Instead, they held onto two tight ends and hoped they could bring him back as a backup tight end option.

Now, they'll have to watch him grow from the Arizona desert.
