The Miami Dolphins have had a breakout season in 2023, sitting at 9-3 and atop both the AFC East and the AFC through 13 weeks of the season. And that breakout season might not have happened as it has without the breakout season from one of its stars.
That effort hasn't been lost on Mike McDaniel and Dolphins general manager Chris Grier.
The Dolphins and OT Austin Jackson agreed on a 3-year, $36 million contract extension on Thursday.
It's been a tough tenure in Miami for Jackson. Drafted by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2020 draft, he never seemed to materialize to be the player they envisioned him to be. Between position changes, inconsistent play, and an ankle injury that robbed him of most of the 2022 season, he never was able to make an impact.
Accordingly, the Dolphins declined to pick up his fifth-year rookie option in May 2023.
This year, Jackson gave them plenty of reason to reconsider, starting in all 12 games and providing solid protection for Tua Tagovailoa's blind side. He has earned a Pro Football Focus grade of 67.3 with a pass blocking mark of 70.0 so far this season, both of which are far and away the best of his career by a wide margin.
With Terron Armstead continually dealing with injuries through his first two seasons in Miami and the Dolphins having their interior line starters all free agents after the season, the team has a ton of questions to answer about its offensive line in the offseason.
Now they have one less to deal with.
