Michael Irvin is not one to ever shy away from making a strong or even outlandish statement at times. The outspoken Cowboys great has always worn his feelings on his sleeve.
Irvin wasn't any different on the Rich Eisen Show on Friday, and he talked about the comparison between Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek hill and Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss. Responding to comments that Wes Welker made a week ago about Hill being a more well-rounded receiver than Moss, Irvin likewise had an interesting compliment about Hill.
'He's a different dude'
"I said this. I understand what Wes Walker's saying. We see Randy Moss, six four, he runs a four three. Is as fast as Tyreek. You build a passing game around Randy Moss. They have built the whole offensive system around Tyreek Hill. You can't build a whole offensive system around Randy Moss. This dude is different. And as long as he's only team they are not out."
That's some pretty high praise for the Dolphins' franchise player, but it's a distinction that's fair. The difference between a passing game and an entire offense as far as scheme comes down to what Welker was talking about – Hill's extraordinary route running and, more particularly, his ability to take the ball to the house on any given route.
"He's a different dude, man. He hits seam routes, slant routes, anything. He takes them and goes. It is a phenomenal thing, man. That dude is a phenomenal player."
High praise Moss' former teammate
Welker, who played alongside Moss in New England for three seasons, raised some eyebrows a week ago when he talked about Hill being the best receiver he's ever been around.
"Randy is probably the best deep ball receiver, ever in the game. But Tyreek can run the whole route tree," Welker said. "He can run choice (option) routes, he can run lookie (two-way gos). He can take the top off. His ball skills? Coming in and out of breaks.
"Name a route you don't like [Tyreek] on? I can't think of one."
Moss indeed made a name for himself – and a segment on ESPN – for how he used to rise up and take the ball away from defenders. Not to mention, of course, his ability to fly past defenders and connect on go routes better than perhaps any receiver in NFL history.
However, Hill's ability to hit a home run on any play and from anywhere on the field is undeniable, and that's something few receivers, if any ever, have been able to replicate.
Just ask one of the greatest of all time.
