Dobbs will likely be the starter in Minnesota through the end of the season. With that being said, let's get acquainted with the new QB.
1. Dobbs won the 2016 Athlon SEC Offensive Player of the Year
Dobbs had a tremdous 2016 season. The senior QB led the Tennessee Vols to a 9-4 record after throwing for 2,946 yards with 27 passing touchdowns. The QB also rushed for 831 yards and 13 scores. After the season, Dobbs was named the 2016 Athlon SEC Offensive Player of the Year.
The impressive final season cemented Dobbs as a legend in Knoxville. Dobbs ranks fifth in all-time passing yards and passing TDs at the school Dobbs would end up winning the 2016 Music City Bowl MVP in his final season with the Vols.
2. Dobbs didn't get his first NFL start until his 6th season
Dobbs was selected in the 4th round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dobbs spent his first three seasons backing up Ben Roethlisberger before being traded to the Jaguars in 2019.
Dobbs returned to the Steelers for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, again serving as a backup. In 2022, Dobbs went from the Browns to the Lions to the Titans. Due to a Ryan Tannehill injury, Dobbs got his first chance as a starter with the Titans against the Cowboys. Dobbs played well enough to start for the rest of the season in Nashville.
In 2023, Dobbs started the first eight games for the Cardinals.
3. Dobbs has Alopecia and raises awareness about the condition
Dobbs has alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. The disorder first became apparent when Dobbs was in third grade. While with the Cardinals, Dobbs formed a bond with a cheerleader for the team who also has the condition.
"We had a lot of big games (at the University of Tennessee) and of course opposing fans would try to find ways to get in your head, but I took it with the position," Dobbs said. "There's ignorance in the world, but I always use my platform and who I am, and the position I play, to serve as the opportunity to share who I am and what it's like to have alopecia."
4. Dobbs majored in aerospace engineering and interned at NASA
Yeah, Dobbs is really smart. The QB majored in aerospace engineering at Tennessee. Not only that, but the QB maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned the Torchbearer Award, which is the highest honor for an undergraduate at the University of Tennessee.
While a member of the Jaguars in 2019, Dobbs spent a month at the Kennedy Space Center as part of the NFLPA Externship program.
5. Dobbs has now been traded twice this season
This preseason, Dobbs was named the backup QB for the Cleveland Browns. Shortly after, he wound up being traded to the Arizona Cardinals. Dobbs had been starting in Arizona up until today when he was traded to the Vikings.
Now on his seventh different team, Dobbs will look to stick in Minnesota. The QB should have a great opportunity to prove he belongs considering Kirk Cousins is not under contract next season.
