One of the NFL’s best running backs will soon be a free agent.
The Minnesota Vikings are expected to release running back Dalvin Cook on Friday, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported Thursday. This gives teams one last chance to trade for the four-time Pro Bowl selection.
Cook had a cap hit of over $14 million this season. A release would free up $9 million. A trade would free up $11 million, but an acquiring team would have to be willing to take on that $11 million.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Vikings will attempt to trade Cook.
The Vikings will roll with Alexander Mattison as their top running back. They also selected running back DeWayne McBride in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of UAB and have 2021 fourth-round pick Kene Nwangwu and 2022 fifth-round pick Ty Chandler on their 90-man roster.
Cook, 27, has been a Pro Bowl selection every year since 2019. Minnesota selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Florida State.
Cook carried the ball 264 times for 1,173 yards with eight touchdowns and caught 39 passes for 295 yards with two more scores last season. He’s rushed for over 1,000 yards every season since 2019. In his six-year career, Cook has 1,282 carries for 5,993 yards with 47 touchdowns and 221 catches for 1,794 yards with five touchdowns.
Schefter identified the Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos as teams expected to show interest in Cook.
