New Orleans Saints wide receiver Jarvis Landry, a former LSU standout, revealed this week that he was close to signing with the Tennessee Vols before landing with the Tigers.

Landry, a New Orleans area native, made the revelation this week during an appearance on the Truss Levels podcast with New Orleans teammates Cameron Jordan and Mark Ingram.

The former LSU star nearly committed to Tennessee when Lane Kiffin was the Vols' head coach.

“That was at Tennessee when I met Tyrann (Mathieu),” said Landry. “And the guy that got us out there is actually from New Orleans. His name is Frank Wilson. He’s actually back at LSU now but he was the receiver coach at Tennessee at the time. Then I think Lane Kiffin had like a little thing going on over there or whatever it is and everybody kind of like left. I was gonna commit to Tennessee. Frank Wilson goes to LSU and then if you kind of know my story a little bit, that’s when the fam started."

Wilson was the Vols' wide receivers coach in 2009. He left for LSU when Kiffin left for USC.

The departure of Wilson, who is known as one of the most elite recruiters in college football, essentially ended Tennessee's pursuit of Landry.

Landry played against the Vols once in his career, during the 2011 season, but he didn't record any receptions in LSU's 38-7 win.
