The Alabama Crimson Tide are reportedly losing one of their best players to the NCAA transfer portal.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Alabama All-American safety Caleb Downs is "starting the process" of entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Downs is a former five-star recruit who was rated as the No. 1 safety in the 2023 recruiting class.

The Georgia native started at strong safety for Alabama as a true freshman this past season, leading the Crimson Tide in tackles with 107.

According to Alabama's official website, Downs was the first true freshman in program history, dating back to at least 1970, to lead the Crimson Tide in tackles.

Downs' 107 tackles were also the most by an Alabama true freshman in the last 50-plus years.

The talented safety, who will likely be at the top of NFL Draft boards in 2026, will instantly become the most-sought after player in the transfer portal. And he should command a very lucrative NIL deal.
