Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kevin Steele appeared to reference the Tennessee Vols' offense under Josh Heupel while speaking to the media this past weekend.

Steele, who was Tennessee's interim head coach before Heupel was hired (Steele also awkwardly stayed on staff for a little over a month after Heupel was hired to replace Jeremy Pruitt), was asked by a reporter how much he's had to adjust as a defensive coach over the last decade.

"There's a challenge defensively right now in terms of the the tempo, several years back [it] kind of started," said Steele. "And then the multiplicity of formations has gone off the roof in terms of that. We even have people that if they spread out any further, they'd be on the sideline, they'd be on the beach. You know, they're using the whole thing. And so, those kinds of things that have happened."

Steele, who played college football at Tennessee and served as an assistant under Johnny Majors, certainly doesn't appear to be throwing shade at the Vols' offense. Though at the same time, he definitely isn't a fan of defending it.

It'll be up to Heupel and his staff to stay ahead of defensive coordinators like Steele who are eager to stop Tennessee's up-tempo spread offense. The good news for Heupel is that Alabama and other programs can only spend a week preparing for Tennessee's offense, which means Heupel and his staff will have plenty of opportunities each week to add some new wrinkles.
