Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones, who is currently the head coach at Arkansas State, became the latest sports figure to weigh in on the Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift relationship (?) that took the internet by storm over the weekend.
Jones spoke with reporters on Tuesday ahead of his team's game against UMass and he was asked about the budding romance between Kelce and Swift.
(For context, Jones was Kelce's head coach at Cincinnati for a couple of seasons…earlier this year, Kelce told a story about Butch leaving an angry voicemail on his phone while he was playing at Cincinnati.)
"In terms of Travis and Taylor, I'll let everyone else talk about that," said Jones. "I'm focused on UMass."
"I just know that Travis is very charismatic as we know," continued Jones. "He's got a personality and I love him to death — he's like a son to me. So if she's good enough for him, she's good enough for me. So I'll leave it at that."
Sorry, Butch. But there's some cringe in that response.
I don't know the details when it comes to the personal relationship between Jones and Kelce so we'll leave the "like a son" part alone.
It's the "if she's good enough for him, she's good enough for me" that's incredibly cringy.
I seriously doubt that Kelce spent a single second wondering what Butch would think about Taylor before shooting his shot with the mega pop star.
I also seriously doubt that Jones' opinion would've weighed into an ounce of Kelce's decision making when it comes to Taylor.
(Kelce's mom was in the box with Swift at the Kansas City Chiefs game on Sunday….I'm pretty sure that's the only approval that Kelce needs and/or wants.)
I can't blame Jones for wanting to attach his name to Kelce — the Chiefs tight end is one of the most popular people on the planet right now. If nothing else, it could be good for Jones when it comes to recruiting at Arkansas State.
But he could've been a little smoother with his response. Maybe just break out a clever Taylor Swift song reference next time, Butch (though I'm pretty sure every writer on the internet has covered all of those references over the last few days).
South Carolina DB gives Tennessee’s WRs some bulletin board material/motivation ahead of showdown in Neyland
That might not have been a good idea by South Carolina…
