A mistake that former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones made in 2014/2015 was highlighted again this week by a decision the Tennessee Titans made.
The Titans traded a late-round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks earlier this week for defensive back Ugo Amadi, a Nashville native who was selected in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Amadi played college football for the Oregon Ducks, starting 34 games during his time in Eugene.
At one time, it looked like Amadi was going to land with Tennessee. He was the No. 13 rated player in the state of Tennessee, so it would've made sense for the Vols to strongly pursue him.

Amadi, who was committed to Ole Miss at one point, had strong interest in the Volunteers. But Jones went in another direction, choosing to heavily pursue junior college transfer Justin Martin instead.
Martin struggled during his time at UT while Amadi excelled with the Ducks.
It's hard to blame Jones for pursuing Martin, who was also from Nashville and was rated higher than Amadi. However, the pursuit of Martin shouldn't have precluded the Vols from going after Amadi, too.
Remember, coaches don't go off ratings from the recruiting services, they go off their own evaluations.
And Jones' evaluations of Amadi and Martin clearly weren't accurate.
There's a reason that Oregon went across the country to land Amadi. It's the same reason that Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss and Les Miles at LSU also came to Nashville to pursue the talented cornerback.
Jones could've beat out all of those schools for Amadi. And Tennessee would've been better for it.
Of course, Jones' inability to develop players would've hurt Amadi's chances of reaching the NFL. He likely landed in a better situation because of Jones' mistake.
It seems like we're reminded of Jones' ineptitude on a weekly basis.
Which is ultimately just another reason why Vols fans should be thankful for Josh Heupel and the current staff at UT.
