College football analyst predicts Tennessee Vols will pull off a big upset in 2022
The Tennessee Vols are a trendy pick to finish No. 2 in the SEC East in 2022. It makes sense. The Vols had a top 10 offense nationally in 2021 and they're returning a ton of production in quarterback Hendon Hooker, wide receiver Cedric Tillman and running back Jabari Small (among others).
The only thing standing in Tennessee's way of having a legitimate shot at winning the SEC East in 2022 is Georgia, the defending national champions.
Could the Tennessee Vols upset Georgia in 2022?
Tennessee is a long shot at best to win the SEC East in 2022, but if there's any team that can unseat the Bulldogs, it's the Vols.
And one national college football analyst thinks a Vols win against Alabama or Georgia isn't just a possibility, he thinks it's likely.
Long-time college football analyst Matt Hayes appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show this week and predicted that Tennessee will upset either Alabama or Georgia in 2022.
I think the Vols are capable of pulling an upset against Alabama or Georgia, but I don't think it's necessarily likely. I'm not sure Tennessee has the depth to beat either of those teams just yet. That's why Vols fans shouldn't get upset with head coach Josh Heupel if Tennessee ends up going 0-2 against Alabama and Georgia in 2022.
On the other hand, it's worth remembering that UT was down by just seven points against Alabama in the fourth quarter last year before the game got out of hand. And the Vols scored more points against Georgia than any team not named Alabama in 2021.
Tennessee has the potential to do some special things this upcoming season, but the Vols still have some recruiting work to do before they're operating with the same level of talent as Alabama and Georgia.
