On Tuesday, the Titans addressed their hole at linebacker by signing former 49er Azeez Al-Shaair.

Today, Tom Pelissero released the details of the contract:

The $6 million places Al-Shaair as the 16th highest-paid linebacker in the NFL. While that is a little higher than he is probably worth, the deal is only for one year. That means the Titans have a season to see if Shaiir is worthy of a more prominent role before deciding if they want to keep him long-term.

Al-Shaair was a starter in 2021 and played very well during that year. He had 102 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries, and nine tackles for a loss. However, when stars Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw were healthy in 2022, Al-Shaiir moved to a reserve role.

The Titans linebacker room is wide open going into 2023. Monty Rice, Jack Gibbens, Chance Camp, and Luke Gifford are the only linebackers on the roster. Besides Rice, none of those players seem ready for a starting role, so Al-Shaair should have plenty of opportunities to prove himself this season.

This is a smart signing by Carthon and one that does not hurt the Titans when it comes to future cap flexibility.
