Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton is currently being projected as a mid to late round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Milton, who started his college career at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee in 2021, has the physical traits that NFL teams love in a quarterback — big arm, elite size, and plenty of speed.

A lack of consistency, though, is why Milton isn't expected to be drafted higher.

According to The Athletic's Dane Brugler, some NFL teams believe that Milton will eventually transition to tight end, due in large part to that lack of consistency.

"Overall, Milton has the physical tools that scream first-round pick, but his passing instincts and ability to read the field are undeveloped," noted Brugler in his annual The Beast NFL draft guide. "He is a project quarterback prospect, and some teams believe he will eventually transition to tight end in the NFL (similar path as Logan Thomas)."

Brugler also pointed out that one of Milton's strengths is an "outstanding finishing toughness as a runner, dropping his pads to power through bodies".

For now, Milton's plan is to make it in the NFL as a quarterback. And I'm sure there will be a few NFL teams willing to give him that chance considering the physical tools he brings to the table.

But if quarterback doesn't work out for Milton and he wants to stick around in the NFL, then a position switch could make sense (Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce, for example, was a quarterback when he enrolled at Cincinnati before eventually making the switch to tight end).

Milton deserves the chance to prove he can be a quarterback at the next level. I don't think anyone is suggesting that he make a switch now. But at least there's a backup plan for the former Vol if the transition to playing quarterback in the NFL isn't a smooth process.
