ESPN's Matt Bowen named the best team fits for the top 10 remaining NFL free agents this week and he thinks a former second-team All-Pro wide receiver would make sense for the Tennessee Titans.
Bowen suggested that free-agent wide receiver Cole Beasley would be a solid fit in Nashville.
The Titans drafted Treylon Burks to replace A.J. Brown in their offense, and veteran Robert Woods is a good fit here given the in-breaking cuts we see in the team's pass game. But Beasley would add a different element in 11 personnel sets, where the Titans need a boost in the dropback pass game on third down. He can shake coverage on crossers and option routes to give quarterback Ryan Tannehill a dependable second-level target when throwing from the pocket. Tennessee definitely needs some help here after ranking 27th in expected points added on third-down dropbacks last season.
Beasley, a former SMU standout who went undrafted in 2012, has spent 10 seasons in the NFL. He's never had a season where he's gone beyond 1,000 receiving yards, but he's coming off back-to-back seasons with 82 receptions. Beasley is a reliable option on third down that could help the Titans pick up critical first-downs in third-and-medium and/or third-and-long situations (Derrick Henry is obviously the go-to in third-and-short situations).
The Titans definitely need to sign a veteran wide receiver at some point this summer. There are too many unknowns with Robert Woods (coming off a torn ACL) and Treylon Burks (a rookie who has a lot to prove in the NFL). Beasley would provide some much-needed security at the wide receiver position for the Titans.
