ESPN NFL draft expert Matt Miller explained this week why Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton could be the last quarterback standing in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Miller noted that there are only seven quarterbacks who will likely be selected in the third round or earlier. And after those seven quarterbacks, Miller thinks there's quite a drop off. So much of a drop off, in fact, that Miller thinks Milton might be the only other quarterback in the draft worth taking a chance on.
(Those seven quarterbacks are Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix, Michael Penix, and Spencer Rattler.)
From ESPN: The 2023 draft saw 14 quarterbacks drafted, the most since 2016 (15). But after a full view of the class at the combine, I'm confident we won't see that number topped in 2024. After the top seven quarterbacks in this class, it's a big drop-off. The good news for NFL teams is that there are seven good QBs who will likely all be selected in the top three rounds (Williams, Daniels, Maye, McCarthy, Nix, Penix and Rattler). The bad news is that there is little depth and no standout developmental prospects. Maybe a team falls in love with the incredible arm strength of Joe Milton III (Tennessee) late in the draft, but it's a stretch to find 10 draftable quarterbacks in this group.
It would be quite a shock if Milton goes undrafted. He has all the physical tools that an NFL team could want in a quarterback (size, strength, speed, arm).
A year ago, former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, who has a similar build as Milton (and also has a big arm), was a first round pick after passing for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while rushing for 654 yards and nine touchdowns.
This past season, Milton passed for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing for 299 yards and seven touchdowns.
It's hard to believe that one of those quarterbacks was a top five selection and the other might be the last quarterback selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
But that's the NFL draft for you — it rarely makes sense and every year countless NFL teams make foolish decisions. Time will tell if their evaluation of Milton is correct.

Would be fun to see him stay in Tennessee
