The Tennessee Vols' 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation.

That ranking could be rising in the near future.

That's because several top uncommitted recruits are interested in Tennessee, including five-star cornerback Tony Mitchell.

Mitchell, 6-foot-2/180 lbs from Alabaster, AL (Thompson), is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 3 cornerback in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Alabama. He's also ranked as the No. 20 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

The talented defensive back told On3 this week that Tennessee has emerged as one of his top schools.

"I like the new coaching staff and I feel like me and other top recruits in my class can turn the program around," said Mitchell to On3.

The Vols definitely have something special brewing with this recruiting class.

But if they manage to land a five-star cornerback out of the state of Alabama, then I think we might be seeing the beginning of a championship foundation for Tennessee.

The only way to win the SEC East and compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff is to recruit at an extremely high level. It's going to take several top-five recruiting classes in a row for the Vols to get to a point where they can compete with Alabama and Georgia.

And right now, Tennessee appears to be destined for a top-five class in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Vol fans have had plenty of false alarms over the last decade where they thought the program was "back" only to end up disappointed. It's still far too early to proclaim that Tennessee is "back" under Josh Heupel, but it certainly feels like it's trending in that direction.
