The Tennessee Vols wrapped up spring football a little over a week ago, which means we're entering the summer months full of various rankings, lists, and wild hot takes.
In other words, college football fans are right in the middle of the long offseason.
A few months from now, the first preseason AP Top 25 poll will be released. But until that poll is released, there will be plenty of speculation about where teams will be ranked. And plenty of opinions on whether or not those rankings are fair.
On Monday, 247Sports' Brandon Marcello revealed his post-spring top 30 rankings. And he had a fair ranking for the Vols. Marcello placed Tennessee at No. 9 in his post-spring rankings.
From 247Sports: The Vols will score points, even while replacing receivers Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman. The next big stars in Josh Heupel's electrifying offense will be Squirrel White and Bru McCoy. Defensively, the Vols have more talent but it's not polished. The secondary was among the worst in the country and though most of the starters return, does that mean they will improve? The hope is the defensive front covers up those spots with the additions of Arizona State transfer Omarr Norman-Lott, a favorite of position coach Rodney Garner, and 4-star freshman linebacker Arion Carter.
Tennessee has high expectations in 2023. Vols head coach Josh Heupel made it clear that week that he doesn't plan on losing any games this fall. But this Tennessee team still has to prove that they can pick up where the 2022 team left off. There's plenty of talent in Knoxville, but that talent has to show they can play at the elite level that the Vols will need them to play at to compete for a championship.
For now, being ranked No. 9 is probably where the Vols should be. But don't be surprised if they rapidly climb in the rankings in 2023 just like they did in 2022.
